How to Clean Interior Shutters
No matter how hard we wish, there's still no such thing as window treatments you never have to clean. However, in the wide world of window coverings, Hunter Douglas plantation shutters, also known as interior shutters, are some of the easiest to maintain. Our team from The Drapery Shop is here this month to help California homeowners understand how to clean plantation shutters to maintain the treatment for long-term use and optimal aesthetics.
Step 1: Dry
Start with dry cleaning. Take a dry rag or duster and dust the interior shutters, valances, cornices, and entire window frame. Wait a few moments between moving on to step 2 to give any dust that has been disturbed a chance to settle so it doesn't end up coming down at the end on your newly polished interior shutters. There are many modern dusters specifically designed to fit around the linear frame of interior shutters that can make step 1 of cleaning interior shutters easier and more efficient.
Step 2: Wet
In step 2 of cleaning interior shutters, we introduce a wet cleaning agent, like a mile cleanser, applied with a damp cloth but not soaking it. Never spray the cleanser directly on interior shutters. Instead, spray the cloth and wipe onto the shutter, ensuring thoroughness around the tilt bar and edges of the louvers. There should never be standing water or cleaners sitting on the louvers, even during the wet cleaning phase. Allow Hunter Douglas interior shutters to completely dry before moving to step 3.
Step 3: Polish
Polish can create a protective layer on interior plantation shutters and help nourish wooden elements. You can use different types of polish depending on the type of Hunter Douglas interior shutters you have. Always check with the manufacturer for best practices and products to use on your shutters.
Tips for Cleaning Interior Shutters
- Spot Treat Immediately: Even though the hard louvers of Hunter Douglas interior shutters are largely impervious to various detritus, you never want to leave a mess. Clean up messes you see immediately, especially if there's a liquid.
- Keep A Routine Cleaning Schedule: By doing light cleaning regularly, you can vastly decrease the time you spend deep cleaning. Weekly dusting is all it takes to keep up with cleaning interior shutters, with our three-step process above being a quarterly event.
